1.1 THE INTERIM JOINT MATRICULATION BOARD

The Interim Joint Matriculation Board was established in 1976 by the

Interim Common Services Agency (ICSA). ICSA itself was established by

the government of the old Northern Region of Nigeria to provide

educational and social services to the people of the region. The first

IJMBE (Interim Join Matriculation Board Examination) was held in 1977

for all students who had undergone the IJMB post secondary education

program in the existing schools of Basic/Preliminary studies which had

replaced the HSC.

The IJMBE is essentially an Advance Level Examination except for only

two subjects offered at the ordinary level. The standard of the

examination at both levels is equal to that of the West Africa

Examination Council (WAEC) at similar levels. Candidates use the

result of this examination to seek for admission at the 200 level in

the University, through IJMB Direct Entry program.

Candidate for this examination are admitted as IJMBE students by the

affiliated colleges, either for a year to two years program of

studies. The writing of this examination signifies the end of the

program. A candidate is required to obtain a minimum of 7/8 out of 15

points to qualify for university admission at 200 level. Candidates

are required to have 5 O’ level credits (including Mathematics and

English) before their admitted into the university.

IJMBE offers two subjects at O’ level (English and Mathematics),

which are taken by those who failed to have credit passes in them at

SSCE/NECO.

1.2 STRUCTURES OF IJMB EXAMINATION

- Candidates shall offer at least three main subject at A’ Level.

- The overall mark in each subject shall be expressed at a percentage,

and may include an element in respect of Continuous Assessment (CA).

- For every A’Level subject registered each candidates must have a C.A

grade which carries 20% of the total scores.

- All science subjects in IJMB Examination, expect A’Level

Mathematics, have one practical paper each, which carries substantial

percentage of the total scores.

- All social science subjects have two papers only, expect for

Economics, which has objective questions as Paper III.

- There are three papers to Arts subjects (Literature in English and CRS).

- The conversion of IJMB Grades is as follows:

A’ Level Subjects O’Level Subject

A – 70% and above A – Excellent (60 100%)

B – 60 69% C – Credit (40 59%)

C – 50 95% P – Pass (35 39%)

D – 45 49% F – Fail (0 34%)

E – 40 44%

F – below 40%

IJMBE results are released after 3 months of the examination.

1.3 WHY RESULTS ARE WITHHELD?

There are three conditions under which your results can be withheld.

These are where:

• You have no C.A record,

• You deliberately absent your self in a subject paper, and

• Your C.A. grades are submitted after the marking excises especially

after the submission of the result by the subject panel.

1.4 WHY RESULTS ARE CANCELLED

Your results in all subjects may carry the letter Z which mean they

are cancelled if:

• You were involved in cheating in the examination by either receiving

assistance from somebody, copying someone’s work or you are found with

prohibited materials.

• You were rude to an Invigilator or Supervisor or nay other

examination official, or

• You attempted to deface the script of another candidate or some

other examination materials.

1.5 COMPLAINTS ON WITHHELD/CANCELLED RESULTS

Result are either cancelled or withheld for reason of breaking

examination regulation or lack of C.A. grades. But supposing you are

sure you did C.A. but your results are withheld nonetheless, you may

complain for a revivification. Where the records in the IJMBE Office

show you indeed have a C.A. grade, it will be restored and your

results released. This does not however apply if your C.A. grades are

submitted after the marking or only when you have complained to your

school. In the later instance, the C.A. grades are NOT acceptable.

When your results are cancelled, there is no appeal that sways the

Board into reversing the decision. This is because cases of

malpractice investigated and deliberated upon at two levels before

being presented to the Board for consideration. Where the Board feels

your case does not warrant cancellation of results, it would not

approve of it. But once the recommendation for cancellation is

accepted, it stays.

1.6 THE REVIEW OF IJMBE SUBJECTS COMBINATIONS AND SYLLABUS

On Thursday 19th August 2004, the IJMBE Governing Board approved the

review and updating of the existing A-‘ level subject combinations.

This was with the aim of streamlining and making them more relevant

when candidates seek admission. In addition, the updated subject

combinations were to be tailored towards definite course

specialization and acceptability in universities.

The Committee set up came up with the following recommendations:

• The existing seventeen A’ Level IJMBE subjects be retained.

• The introduction of two new subjects at the A’ Level French, for its

international appeal and Yoruba as an alternative to Hausa for

candidates in the South West IJMBE affiliated Institutions.

• The IJMBE subjects be grouped into three viz:

• Arts

• Science

• Social Science

prerequisites are placed alongside. With the understanding and

cooperation of the IJMBE Secretariat, the Committee went ahead to

identify, using IJMB brochure, possible undergraduate courses for each

combination.
